Ed Kalas, Division Manager of Environmental and Community Health
Education and History
Ed Kalas, MPH, RS, began his public health career over 20 years ago in Tulsa, where he received his basic training in the environmental health profession and earned his Master's of Public Health from the University of Oklahoma-Health Sciences Center in 1996. He began working for the Shawnee County Health Agency in 1998 as a team leader in the air quality program, eventually taking on the restaurant inspection and childcare licensing programs. He became division manager in 2007.

Current Work

He currently manages three teams, all of which concentrate on preventing the spread of communicable disease in Shawnee County: 

  • Childcare Licensing
  • Communicable Disease
  • EnvironmentalHealth

Leadership in Environmental Public Health
  • Registered as a sanitarian with the Kansas Joint Committee for the Credentialing of Sanitarians (JCCS)
  • National Fellow for the Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute.
  • Board member and former President of the Kansas Environmental Health and the Kansas Public Health Associations
  • Board member of Joint Committee for the Credentialing of Sanitarians
  • National workgroup member of the National Public Health Performance Standards (NPHPSP), Version 3 and the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO)-Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships, a community-driven performance improvement and strategic planning/action process
  • Member and chair of the Shawnee County Solid Waste Planning Committee
  • Coordinator/Facilitator for the Centers for Disease Control NPHPSP Local Assessment for Shawnee County
